For some of you, you already know what PR is and why it’s valuable to your business.
But for others, you may have wondered what it is, precisely, and why you would even need it. Especially if you’ve grown your business organically through word of mouth or networking at events.
But even that’s you, there will likely come a day where you find yourself yearning to get your message out on a global level. And that’s where PR starts to come in.
In a nutshell, what PR is is simply using preexisting media sources to get the word out about you. What makes it so powerful is those media sources come with a built-in audience, so it’s a simple and fast way to get in front of a different audience than the one you already have access to.
PR is different from marketing because marketing is you building up your own audience from the ground up. While this is, of course, extremely valuable and powerful, it’s going to take longer than simply accessing someone else’s audience.
This is why when you’re ready to turbocharge your visibility and your credibility, it’s time to get serious about generating PR.
The best PR happens when you’re confident, have a great relationship with the media and can see results in your business. (Which is why one of my core teachings is how to take the PR you get and turn it into customers, clients, and buyers.)
It’s also important to create a specific media plan for your business. Each business will have its own unique mix of media (that includes print, radio and TV) that will catapult you and your business to a household name.
Once you’ve cracked the code for your own business, the sky is the limit.
Now, let’s talk about why it matters.
In this day and age with so many people vying for FB live views and Instagram likes and fretting about how big their email list is, it’s easy to forget there are built-in audiences out there who want what you offer.
Rather than market your business one person at a time, you can leverage your visibility and get in front of hundreds, thousands or even millions with a simple interview.
Take my client Jeanne. She was able to get on the biggest morning show in her area, and with a 5-minute interview, had more people visit her website in a month then had visited her site for the two years prior. Even better, she was able to leverage that market to fill her event.
Sure, she could have passed out flyers one by one, but do you see how much more powerful it was to get on TV? She was able to have a much bigger impact in a much shorter time.
That’s the power of PR.
